West Wawanosh Mutual Insurance Company has an immediate opportunity for a Commercial Underwriter to join our Underwriting Team in a full-time position in Goderich, Ontario.  At this time, upon successful completion of a 6-month training period in the physical office, West Wawanosh Mutual  provides a flexible hybrid work arrangement opportunity for this position, consisting of the option to work remotely for up to 2 days/week.

Reporting directly to the Underwriting Manager, this position is to review, analyze, and evaluate commercial property and liability business at all transactional touch-points to determine risk level by using different methods of investigation. Working within a team environment, the incumbent will provide calculations for policies and support to our broker force. The incumbent must evaluate policies based on acceptability of risk with a focus of reducing claim exposure while promoting new business and retention for the company.

West Wawanosh Mutual Insurance (WWMIC) was formed in 1879, by a group of farmers who banded together when other insurance companies refused to help. They have a deep history of supporting their neighbours and a commitment to strong relationships and local connections.

With just under 30 employees, WWMIC currently underwrites approximately $29 million in gross written premium and has a sizable surplus. Located in beautiful Goderich, Ontario WWMIC offers insurance coverage for commercial, farm, residential, and automobiles to communities such as Blyth, Goderich, Seaforth, Lucknow, Kincardine, Hanover, Owen Sound, Bracebridge, and Parry Sound.

KEY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Strong interpersonal and effective communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Sound judgment in decision making, problem solving and prioritization
  • Demonstrated ability to handle multiple and varied complex assignments
  • Strong computer skills and the ability to adapt to changes in technology, processes and workflow
  • Must work well as part of a team and contribute to a positive work environment
  • Professional and courteous customer service skills
  • Ability to perform moderate mathematical calculations

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Completion of post-secondary education in a related field
  • Three (3) years minimum of insurance industry experience
  • Completion or commitment to achieve professional designation such as Chartered Insurance Professional
  • Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of commercial policies, guidelines, wordings and products
  • Farm underwriting experience would be a definite asset
